You know you're the parent of a child with diabetes when ...

  1. Your 10-year-old daughter looks at a beautiful, pinkish-purple sunset and declares, "That is so pretty! It looks like an infected site!"
  2. You don't bat an eye when your teen says, "I have alcohol in my room."
  3. Your child practices her math facts using her MultiClix lancing device as a counter!
  4. The toilet is stuffed, you call the plumber, he snakes the bowl, and at the end of his snake is a piece of blue plastic that just happens to match the blue plastic cover of your son's inset infusion set.
  5. Your non-D child refers to all numbers as carbs - "I'm 3 carbs old!"
  6. Your six-year-old child announces that she didn't get high at that party and you know exactly what she meant, but the person next to you just looks at the two of you with a concerned face.
  7. You are watching a football game and report that your team is behind by 4 units and nobody thinks a thing of it.
  8. You wake up in the night, see the projection clock that says "5:30" and you think your child's blood sugar is 530!
  9. You find Cake Mate in the bedroom of your non-D child for when he's low.
  10. You notice someone giving you a concerned look and realize that they have overheard your cell phone conversation with your teen daughter that went something like this: "You are high? You were high last night too at about this time."
  11. Your son opens the car door at church and laughs because there's a test strip on the parking lot - and of course it's the type you use!
  12. The stray dog who has parked himself on your deck has only been there 10 minutes and already has a test strip attached to his fur!
