Hi. My name is Jaida and I am six years old. In late September 2010, I found out I had type 1 diabetes.
My parents noticed that I was thirsty all the time and using the bathroom a lot more than I used to. They also noticed that I looked like I had lost weight. When they took me to see the doctor, she made me take a blood test. I did not want to and cried some. When we left the doctor, they called my parents on the way home and told them to take me to the emergency room because my blood sugar was 511 and there was glucose in my urine.
On the way to the hospital I was scared because I heard my Mommy saying I was going to have to stay overnight. When we got there they pricked my finger and took more blood than I do now. Their finger pricker was bigger than the one I use now.
I was in the hospital two nights. When I came home I was afraid to eat because I thought I might get sick. Now I'm not afraid to eat anymore and I check my own sugar and do my own shots.
If you just found out you have diabetes, don't be afraid because you will feel better.
I don't know anybody with type 1 diabetes. You can email my mom at
