Back to Kid' Voices Sabrina

Hey, I'm Sabrina and I am currently 12 going on 13. I live in Australia. Anyway, when I first got diabetes I was in America, more detailed, New York. My family and I were travelling around USA!

My parents kept saying they were going to get me checked by the doctor, my mum had had gestational diabetes with both my sister and I, and they were noticing that I was drinking tons of water and going to the toilet every 5 minutes(it felt like) or so.

So in NY one night, the second night I was there, I had terrible stomach cramps. In the morning my mum took me to the pharmacy but they had no idea what was wrong with me, so we went to the doctors and they told us they could only take kids 16 and over. So we went to the hospital and I was lying on the bed with a drip for hours and hours. When they told me it was true I had diabetes, everyone was devastated. They kind of expected it but it was still a very traumatic day. At the time my mum was with me and when she called my dad and my sister they came straight away.

I had lots of support, after they transported me in an ambulance across the city to 114th street from where we were staying was on 50th street. They took great care of me and they let us go to Orlando, Disney world.

It is now March 2010 and I still go about my life like a normal almost teenager would apart from the little injections. My kit goes everywhere with me and I can still do sports and activities. I got 14 A's at my grade 6 end of year report and my graduation was the best!

No one treats me differently like I'm some weirdo which was one of the things I was mostly scared of when I was diagnosed and came back from America after a relaxing end to the trip in Hawaii. I hope anyone that reads this will feel like they are not alone. We all go through this and hardly anyone changes. I have the support, friends, school :-( Facebook and my life.

Good Luck xoxoxoxo
