Hi! My name is Ryan and I am 7 years old. My family lives in southern California. I have been living with diabetes since I was 3 years old. My Mom says I've had more than 6,000 insulin shots so far. I have about 5 of them a day. I remember being in the hospital...mostly good stuff, like running down the hall to pick out the best movies at the nurses station. I remember being very scared to get my shots in the beginning.
My parents didn't even know that kids could get diabetes, but they learned quickly how to manage it. I am going into the second grade. I know how to give my own shots at school with my lunch. I tried the pump last summer but the infusion sets scared me (and hurt more than a shot sometimes). I wanted to go back to shots after a couple of weeks. Maybe I will try again when I'm 8 or 9.
My Mom calls me her hero and my Dad says he thinks I'm brave. My little brother thinks I'm pretty tough to get shots all the time...he is pretty scared of shots like most kids. I like to show other kids that I am brave by poking my fingers and giving myself shots in front of them. Sometimes I call myself a vampire because I like to suck the blood out of my finger...(maybe I really do it because it's funny to see kids reactions).
I just learned how to surf this summer. I like to go fishing with my Dad too. I caught a 2 foot silky shark and a halibut off my Dads kayak. My favorite foods are my Moms meatloaf & mac n cheese, but I do also eat lots of fruits and vegetables because I know it is good for me. I also do martial arts (mostly karate). My favorite band is Green Day.
I hope very much that one day there will be a cure for diabetes. My family does the JDRF "walk to cure diabetes" every year. I have a good friend that has diabetes too. We met when I was 3 and he was 4....now I am 7 and he is 8. It's cool being friends with someone who does the same stuff as you do everyday.
If you would like to write me, I will be happy to write you back.
