Hi. My name is Hope. I am seven years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on November 1, 2006.
It all started when I got sick that Sunday, the same time my brother had the flu. I was urinating frequently and drinking a lot, my parents just thought I was sick like my brother. When I started vomiting up everything I drank we knew there was something really wrong. So on trick or treat night my parents took me to the hospital. When we got there I was scared. They gave me an IV in my arm because I was so dehydrated and had lost a lot of weight.
When they checked my urine they discovered that there was ketones, so they tested me for diabetes. My blood sugar level was 1,594! So they immediately called for an ambulance to take me to Children's Hospital. Once we got there they admitted me right away. I was in Children's Hospital for three days. In that period of time I got shots and finger pricks four times a day. The nurses and staff were really nice and helped me and my parents out a lot.
Even though I have to do shots and blood draws every day I know I will have a long and healthy life. I can still play with my friends and ride my bike.
