Back to Kid' Voices Autumn

Hi! My name is Autumn. I was diagnosed with type 1 on diabetes March 21, 2003. I live in Tennessee. I love drag racing! I drag race almost every weekend. It's a lot of work, but so much fun. I've won one race, and recently got runner-up out of twenty-one other Junior dragsters like me. I have been drag racing for two and a half years. I love drag racing because I have made a lot of friends, and I love the rush and speed.

The cool thing about racing is that we are all friends like if someone's car breaks down all of our parents rush over and try to help. We aren't competitive all the time. My car is really cool. It has flames and checkers on it and the logo of my main sponsor, Animas. I want to promote diabetes awareness through drag racing. I've really been trying to get sponsors that relate to diabetes so I was very happy when Animas said they wanted to help this year.

My dragster goes fifty-two miles per hour. It rocks! I am planning on getting a new car this winter. We race for points just like the pros. I'm in 6th place right now out of 21 Junior dragsters.

When drag racing first started it was an all boy sport, but now there are a lot of girls too. I guess what I'm trying to say is that even though I'm diabetic I do regular stuff. Anyone who tells you you can't participate in sports or anything else it's not true. You can still do anything you want as long as you take care of yourself!
