Back to Kids' Voices Kristel

Hi. This is Kristel. She is 22 months old and from New Zealand.

After a whole month of being sick, Kristel finally got diagnosed at 14 months old with type 1 Diabetes on Christmas day 2004. That day is the day we will never forget... we nearly lost her twice that day due to here slowly slipping away since it had taken so long to discover. I cant remember what her blood sugar levels were on diagnosis but the doctors told us one day later and she would of been dead.

But shes not, and we are grateful to have her here with us today!

She is doing great at the moment and we are testing her sugar levels 4-5 times a day (more if shes low or sick) and shes having insulin injections via pens twice a day or for a third if high at lunch time.

She even knows how to do her own testing with a little help, so in no time she will be assisting more often.

We are looking at putting Kristel on a pump next year as we want her to have the best possible life she can after what she has been through.

Sometimes i think why cant she just be a normal little girl, it really hurts to see here being treated different all the time!

Kristel is an only child at the moment, but if we have another child that gets diabetes, we will be prepared to take on the new stresses that come with it.

I would love to hear from other parents with children around the same age as Kristel.
