Hi, my name is Eli and I was diagnosed in November 2004 when I was 19 months old. I had been drinking and peeing a lot for about two weeks. Everyone around me noticed that I was not feeling well and I was having trouble breathing. All I wanted to do was lay around and sleep. They knew something was wrong because I never just lie around.
My parents took me to the emergency room in our town and the doctors told us that I had an upper respiratory infection. We went home that night and I slept a lot. The next day my grandma and grandpa were watching me and noticed that I still wasn't feeling any better. They took me to my pediatrician and we met my mom and dad at the hopspital. After they got lots of blood from me and took some X-Rays of my chest, they finally came in and told us that I had Type 1 diabetes. All of my grandmas and grandpas, aunts, and uncle were there when we were told the sad news. I was immediatly hooked up to an IV and taken to ICU. The next day I got to ride in an ambulance with my mommy to a bigger hospital that had a pediatric ICU. I stayed at that hospital for four days. Everyone took great care of me and my mom and dad and they taught them a lot of stuff about how to take care of me. All of my family learned how to take care of me and so did my babysitter.
I am feeling much better now. I get my blood checked four times a day and my mom checks it in the night. I only get one shot in the morning. I have gained a lot of weight and feel really good. I know that I have a long road ahead of me, but I am a pretty tough kid and have a great mom and dad that will take care of me.
