Back to Kids' Voices Carl

Hello, my name is Carl. I am 6 1/2 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes on October 10, 2003. I was in the hospital for four days.

I take two shots a day for now, though I will probably take more soon. I take Humalog and NPH for now, but I might be changing to Lantus.

My doctor is going to put me on the pump in the near future. I wish I didn't have diabetes, but I do. I check my sugar about 5-6 times a day. My mom says that's how you get good control.

I have a little brother but he doesn't have diabetes. I have a black cat named Gizmo. My dad, grandpa, and uncle all have diabetes, but they don't have to take shots, just me.

My mom says this is a roller coaster ride, but we have to deal with it. I know one day they will find a cure, I just want it to be soon!

April 2006 Update

Hello, I am doing so much better now. It has been 2 1/2 years since I was diagnosed. My mom and dad got me a pump. That is really neat! It has helped my A1C go down. Things are still a roller coater ride, I am only 8 1/2, so I am growing like crazy! My family and I do the Diabetes Walk every year; last year we were one of the top fund-raising teams. I hope and pray one day they will find a cure, I don't want to have Diabetes forever.

If you want to email me you can send a note to my mom at JaymeL96 AT
