Back to Kids' Voices Fiona

Fiona was diagnosed on August 22, 2001, just one month and two days after her first birthday. We knew something was very wrong when she started having diapers so heavy they would soak the bed at night after months of staying dry. Fi was so thirsty, always wanting to drink lots water even after nursing for long periods of time. Her pediatrician just thought she had a virus or was teething when we went to see him only a few days before she went into DKA.

It was a long and freighting 24 hours in the ICU of our wonderful local children's hospital, as Fi was close to death. But she pulled through and our family spent the next four days learning a new way of life. Even big sister, who was only five at the time, tried to help the best she could.

Now two years later Fiona is a thriving and happy three-year-old. She has no trouble keeping up with her big sister and learning about her world. Fiona is excited about the prospect of pumping this fall and looks forward to not so many shots. Even for one so young, Fiona seems to have a grace and understanding of this challenge called type-1 diabetes.

Fi's mom Jennifer would be happy to share with others facing diabetes in a baby or toddler. Write to aljen1111 AT

Update, September 2005

Fi has been pumping for two years now. In addition, she has also been diagnosed with Celiac Sprue and Hypo-thyroid disease.
