Back to Kids' Voices Jessica

My name is Jessica and I am 15 years old. I have had diabetes for 8 months now. It all started in the last week of October 2002. I had gone to the doctors three times, and each time had my blood sugar tested. First, it was 15.3 mmol/l [275 mg/dl], but my doctor thought it was a lab mistake so I had to go again and again. On Halloween night I went out with my friends as usual and we just hung out. Anyway, I got home at about 12:30 and the next morning we were woken before school by a call from the doctor and he was very surprised that we weren't called last night. He said my blood sugar was 31 mmol/l [558 mg/dl] and to get to emergency at the hospital right away. I was in such a state of shock because I didn't even know about diabetes and nobody in my family had ever had it before.

I got to the emergency room and my blood was at a skyrocketing -- 39.8 mmol/l [716 mg/dl]. The weird thing was that I wasn't sick then or earlier that week at all. I was just drinking and going to the washroom a lot. The doctors at the hospital still hadn't diagnosed me though. They never did. They just sort of implied it and told me that if I hadn't been it there that day (November 1st) I would have been there passed out by ambulance by Monday.

This whole experience seemed to last forever. I spent 5 days in the hospital and numerous hours after that at meetings to teach me. I took the news better than both my parents. They were all like "it should of happened to me" and everything, but I would much rather of had it myself. I figure if I hadn't got this somebody else would have, so maybe in a way I have saved someone who just couldn't have handled it. But nobody thought I could. They were like, "you already had so much to deal with," and I guess it's true but it always could of been worse.

Well on the other hand of my life I have many friends and have had a few boyfriends too. My family is loving and I do activities including swimming, karate and many other sports with my friends. I still think I'm just the typical teen.

I would very much enjoy if anyone would email me. I will FOR SURE email back!
