Back to Kids' Voices Kaili

Hi my name is Kaili. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on Feb. 24th, 2003, I also just turned 7 in April. My parents (Joanna and Sean) had been concerned for a little while about me losing weight, but just thought that I was just really active and didn't really think to much of it. Well that changed in February when we went to my Noni's 60th birthday party and everyone there began to comment on how thin I looked.

That following Monday, I ended up at my doctor's office and my mom insisted that they run blood test and any other test they could find to see what was wrong. They ended up doing a urine test and I had ketones, next thing I knew I ended up at the emergency room at CHOC. I was really scared and had never been in a hospital or even sick.

Well, its been three months now and I have gained all the weight that I had lost back and feel better. I really hate my shots and don't like to have my blood tested, but my mommy keeps telling me it will make me feel better. I don't understand, except that I have diabetes and I have to eat all the time and be tested. I keep asking why I have diabetes in my body and I keep hoping that it will go away.

I love to play with may cats and dog and play dress up all the time. I know my parents get worried about me but they are doing the best that they can, I sometimes think my mom is crazy because all she does is read about diabetes and is always asking me how I feel, but I know she loves me!
