Hi. My name is Ashley. I'm 13 and I was diagnosed in August 2002 with type 1 diabetes.
I live in Oklahoma. I have a dog named Skittles. Diabetes is thick on my mom's side of the family so she started noticing symptoms early enough so that I didn't have to find out about it in a hospital emergency room. She asked a friend of hers to check my blood sugar and sure enough it was high (357) so we went to the doctor and got it confirmed.
School started just two weeks after I was diagnosed and it seemed like I caught every cold that was going around. I missed a lot of school. The doctor said my resistance was down from being dehydrated and losing so much weight over the summer. I'm feeling much better now but if I have an extremely active day I'm totally worn out the next day. Does anyone else do this?
If you would like to be my pen pal please e-mail me at
