Back to Kids' Voices Patrick

Hi my name is Patrick. I am 6 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes in February 2003. I had had a bad winter of being sick and had just gotten over a virus when I started going to the bathroom a lot. I was drinking a lot and always hungry. I started losing weight and wanted to sleep a lot too. My mom thought I was coming down with the same virus again and took me to the doctor. She ask them about my weight lose and that set my doctor into asking her lots of question. They sent me down stairs to have some blood test done. I cried a lot, all I wanted to do was go home and sleep. They let my mom take me home, but later they called and told her to take me to the hospital. My sugar was 995. I spent 4 days in the children's hospital, two of them in ICU. I begged them to stop and I did not understand why they kept sticking my with the needles. The doctor told my mom I was close to going into a coma.

Now I am back in school and feeling great. I started out taking three shots a day, but now I only take one in the morning and one at dinner if my sugar is over 100. I have gained all of my weight back and some. I am cool about not eating candy -- mom never let me have much anyway -- so I am not missing it. I know what I can eat and what I can't eat, and I will tell you so. My mom still worries a lot, and I get to see my step dad turn green when my mom gives me my shots.

I have a great granny that helps a lot and a sister that loves me, so I know I am going to be ok. I am looking forward to playing baseball next year.
