Back to Kids' Voices Colleen

Hi! my name is Colleen. I am 12 years old and have had diabetes since I was 6. I was drinking a lot of water, eating a lot of food, and going to the bathroom a lot. Finally my mom and dad to me to my doctor. He told my parents and I that I might have diabetes and that they needed to take me to the hospital right away. My parents took me to the emergency room at the hospital where they did my blood sugar. It was 1,400! (That's 77.8 mmol/l if you're not in the US.)

They immediately hooked me up to a IV and gave me a shot. I couldn't eat or drink anything for 24 hours. I could only wet my lips with a cloth. That night I went to my own room. I was only 6 years old and I was very scared. The nurses tested my sugar level every hour. In the morning they gave me a really good breakfast. I stayed at the hospital for 2 days and 3 nights. When I came home, my mom's friends at her work gave me a gigantic basket filled with toys and stuffed animals.

In 1998 my mom's work was entering a diabetes T-Shirt contest. I entered a T-Shirt design that I had made on paper and won first prize! I got a special plaque and my T-Shirt drawing was actually made into a T-Shirt!

I have had diabetes for 6 years now and I'm getting better at it. I used to hate it but now it's better. I don't like how sometimes my friends eat candy and drink regular sodas in front of me but, I deal with it.

I like to shop, go to the mall, draw, chat on AOL, go to movies, play basketball, softball, and field hockey, and chat on the phone. My email address is SunnyChic8439[@] and if anyone has AOL my screen name is SunnyChic8439.
