Back to Kids' Voices Jessica

Hi, My name is Jessica. I am 9 years old. I was diagnosed on October 23, 2000. My mom noticed that I was sick and thought I had the flu. She called the doctor and made an appointment, but it was for a week later. Mom didn't think anything of it when I came home from school tired and I didn't want to eat much, but drank a lot and went to the bathroom a lot.

A few days later I started to vomit off and on all night. Mom and Dad was both at work and my older sister was taking care of us. My sister called mom at work to tell her that I was getting sick, but told mom that she was taking care of me and not to worry. When my mom and dad came home that morning as they both work nights they saw a change in me. I lost 7 lb through the course of the night from vomiting. Dad grabbed me and they took me to the ER right away.

At the ER they took blood from my arm and the doctor came back to tell my parents that I had type 1 diabetes. My sugar was at 660. So they started an IV right away and put a catheter in. They took me then to the step down unit, which I stayed there for 3 days, before they put me into another room for 2 days as I was getting better.

When I was first diagnosed, I was scared, but the staff at the hospital was very nice and helpful. I didn't mind the shots or the finger pricks. Even the IV didn't hurt.

I wear a pump now and I love it! In this picture I was with Santa Christmas 2001. I would love to get email. My parent's address is tdmix [at]
