Back to Kids' Voices Kyle

Hi. My name is Kyle. I am 21 months old. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 16 months old. I hadn't been feeling well for about a week or two, and had an appointment to see my pediatrician for an ear infection I had. My mommy told the doctor about how I was drinking water all the time, even waking up in the middle of the night to drink. I would soak my diapers and they would leak and get me all wet about every hour. I didn't want any food, and I was really tired and had no energy. So the doctor checked my urine for sugar, and it was positive. He told us that I had diabetes and sent us straight to the hospital.

It was scary, because once they found out how high my blood sugar was (910), they hooked me up to all kinds of stuff and took me to pediatric ICU, and my mommy had to leave me for a while.

The next day I got to eat, go to a regular room, and play in their play room. Mommy and daddy and my big brother, Tyler, pulled me around in a big wagon most of the time, and there was a helicopter right outside my window. I liked looking at that. The nurses were really nice to me, and let me run all over the halls. The hospital wasn't very scary anymore. I had to stay for 4 days.

Now I am home and my mommy and daddy take very good care of me. I don't even cry when mommy pokes my fingers, but the shots hurt a little. I am glad that I know what is wrong and now I am feeling much better. I still do all the things I used to do. I like to play and run outside with my big brother, ride my tricycle, and play with trucks.
