Back to Kids' Voices Shelby

Photo My name is Shelby. I am one year old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 20 days after my first birthday.

My grandmother watches my sister Ariel and me during the day and my grandmother noticed that I was really sleepy. I didn't want to eat anything. My mommy and grandmother took me to the doctor and they told my mom that there was nothing wrong with me and that it was probably just the start of a cold. They sent us home.

The next day, I was even sleepier, so my mommy took me back to the doctor. They still didn't know what was wrong. They tested me for a urinary tract infection and noticed large amounts of sugar in my urine. They decided to test my blood sugar and my level was 550. They told my mommy and grandmother that I needed to go to the hospital. My mommy cried a lot. They took me in an ambulance, but my mommy couldn't go along with me.

My daddy was there when I got to the hospital. I only stayed one night and then they let me go home. The nurses showed my mommy, daddy, and grandmother how to give me my shots and check my levels. We have to check them at least four times a day. I get two shots a day.

The nurses told my mommy and daddy that I can still do everything the same as I did before. That's good because I really like playing with my sister Ariel (even though she always takes my toys). Mommy and daddy say that having diabetes is a real learning experience because there is so much to learn and know.

My mommy says that everything will be OK though, because she knows that God will send angels to watch over us.
