Hi, my name is Stasi. I am 4 1/2 years old and I have had Juvenile Diabetes since April 15, 1998. My age at that time was a mere 16 months old. Talk about a major adjustment for me, even at that age, and for my family. I am now nearing the age of 5 and this is my story.
My mom had taken me to the ER the night of April 15, 1998, after so much vomiting and not eating any kind of food. All I ever wanted to do was drink milk every half hour and I wet through my diapers every hour on the hour. My mom and dad say that when the doctors told them my diagnosis, it felt like a truck just completely ran into them and left them numb and speechless. The guilt that was felt by my parents was unbelievable. The doctors immediately started administering insulin into my body upon diagnosis.
It's been very hard for my family, especially for my 8-year old brother, Jimmy. He feels sorry for me all the time and, in the beginning, always asked if I was going to die. Mommy and daddy always told him that I will be around for a long time and all I need is just some extra care to keep me healthy. He won't eat any sweets hardly either, to help me out with the wants of BAD food! I love him so much, he is my brother and my best friend.
We were to start the pump last year, but unfortunately, that didn't go through with the plans. I just wasn't ready. But, oh what a year I've had this year. I started Pre-K 3 in the winter and am now in Pre-K 4. Mom and dad don't feel as nervous as they once did with the LETTING GO phase of this disease. Mommy said that this was the best thing that ever happened to me. I am learning and interacting. Now, I have one year to prepare myself for Kindergarten next fall, 2002. I had a bad bout with seizures for a while, but I'm doing much, much better now. I still take 4 shots a day and hopefully, in the near future, I will attempt the pump again.
I would love to have pen-pals, get e-mail and just chat about this disease, (especially my mom!) I love Dragon Tales, Arthur and Blue's Clue's. My family has done the annual "Walk To Cure Diabetes" walk for the past 3 years now and my family team name is "STASI'S MIRACLE MARCHERS." Over the past 3 years we have raised over $14,000 for diabetes research. Here is also a picture of me and my best friend, my brother.
Hope to hear from someone soon. My parents' e-mail is [email protected]
