Back to Kids' Voices Monica

Hi! My name is Monica. I am 2 1/2 years old. I love books and playing with my "little people" in my dollhouse. I also like to tease my big brother, Kevin (he's 5) and to squeeze my little sister, Kara (she's 1).

I was diagnosed with diabetes in June 2000. I guess I was pretty lucky, in some ways. I was diagnosed before I got sick from it. I had to go to the hospital, even though I wasn't really sick and I wasn't hurt. It was pretty scary, but Mom and Dad never left my side. Mom and Dad quickly learned how to take care of me, and we were home in two days! I got three new stuffed "friends" in the hospital and they sleep with me every night. One is Mary, a doll with diabetes like me. I can give her finger pokes and shots.

I get finger pokes four times a day and shots twice. The finger pokes don't hurt at all, and I never cried from them since the day I came home. The shots are another story. I still say, "NO" and run away from Mom every time I see one coming, but then I go and sit still for her. Mom is very proud of how I am so brave with my shots.

Now I am doing just great! Other than the shots and pokes, my life is just like it was before I got diabetes. I am back to bring my normal self (Mom says I am a "high energy young lady"). I am taking swimming lessons, which are fun.

I have applied to participate in the "Children's Congress" in Washington next year. I hope I can go. My family and I want to do everything we can to find a cure.

I like making new friends, especially ones who have diabetes, too. You can e-mail me or my mom at
