Sara completed her degree in nursing in 1978. She worked in various fields until beginning to work in diabetes in 1990. She became certified as a diabetes educator in 1993 and was recertified in 1998.

Sara started her diabetes career by developing a diabetes program in the public health system in Portland, Oregon. She then entered the private sector and became the diabetes educator at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York. Sara returned to Portland in 1996 and became a diabetes educator at the Diabetes Institute of Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

She is certified as a pump trainer for MiniMed, Disetronic and Animas. Sara currently works at Oregon Health Sciences University and is studying to become clinical nurse specialist with a concentration in diabetes. She gives talks in the community, is a speaker for Eli Lilly, and also does programs for various meter companies. She also does consulting on product development.
