Is it appropriate to have a five year old exercise throughout the night to lower her blood sugar level? Her blood sugar has been running between 300 and 460 mg/dl [16.7 and 25.6 mmol/L] this past week.
Exercising with blood sugars above 300 mg/dl [16.7 mmol/L], especially with ketones, is not recommended. It is recommended to bring levels into a range below 250 mg/dl [13.9 mmol/L] or 250 to 300 mg/dl [13.9 to 16.7 mmol/L] without ketones. Having ketones and exercising will only compound the problem. Work with your healthcare team to develop a plan when blood sugars are running high prior to exercise. Drinking water and possibly using insulin to bring blood sugars down is an example of a plan.
