From Christiansted St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands:

How long should you fast for a fasting blood sugar test?

Ask the clinician who ordered the test for specific instructions. In general if you were looking to make a diagnosis of diabetes on a fasting blood glucose level, you would not eat for the overnight time period, and have a blood sugar done first thing in the morning, without having any food or drink except water. If it is a glucose tolerance test, which is not done as commonly now, it is important to eat well for the few days before the test.
