I live on the East Coast of the US, and am planning a six-month trip in the West. Am planning on through-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, 2638 miles. I am Type 1 and vegetarian. Any suggestions?
We hope you will enjoy your travels! Combining travel, exercise, and your vegetarian food choices sounds like a very satisfying challenge even without diabetes!
- Be sure to talk with your Diabetes Team for personalized advice, depending on what physical condition you are in, and what food preferences you have.
- Get a copy of the American Association of Diabetes Educators Membership Directory (you could borrow it from any AADE member: ask your Diabetes Team) and look up the names, addresses, and phone numbers of Certified Diabetes Educators (look for the letters C.D.E. after the name in the Directory) along the way of your planned journey. You could call any of them in advance and discuss your plans, and see what thoughts they have.
And bring a copy of the names along with you so you could call them if you had any unexpected problems while on the road.
Also, to find a Certified Diabetes Educator during your trip, you could call 1-800-TEAMUP4.
We wish you success!
P.S. Additional information can be found at Diabetes and a Vegetarian Diet, where Virginia Messina, M.P.H., R.D., writes about the advantages of a vegetarian diet for diabetes.
