ADA Launches Safe At School Campaign

From the American Diabetes Association Advocacy Newsletter:

Dear Diabetes Advocate,

In July we told you that the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) was considering a resolution that opposed training non-medical school staff to provide care to students with diabetes while at school, even in an emergency. Despite responses from more than 6,400 diabetes advocates urging otherwise, AFT passed the resolution, raising a number of questions about how medically safe students with diabetes will now be while at school.

The American Diabetes Association has worked to keep students with diabetes safe at school for years. No resolution will change this. However, we believe that the effort must be stepped up a notch, and to help us do that we are launching the Safe at School campaign.

Your role in the Safe at School campaign may include taking action on more of our alerts, writing letters to the editor of your local newspaper, or other activities. First, though, we want to make sure you know where we stand right now. Please review the information contained in the grey box. Click on the links to get information about different parts of the campaign and what our next steps are.

Prepare for the upcoming school year - Here you will find important information about what steps to take as the new school year approaches, what resources are available to you, and what to do if something changes with your existing agreement with your child's school. Our position and concerns - On this page you will find information explaining our position and why we will not compromise on the safety of students with diabetes. Click here to read the whole story.

Success stories - We also realize that many schools are already meeting the needs of your child. We'd like to hear these success stories as well as it may help us show that training non-medical school staff works fine. Click here to tell us yours!

This is likely to be a long and hard fight. The Safe at School campaign will only be successful if we have your support, Advocate, so expect to hear from us often. We need your passion and your commitment to ensure that students with diabetes are kept safe at school.
