Study Demonstrates Benefits of GlucoWatch in Kids
In Use of the GlucoWatch Biographer in Children With Type 1 Diabetes (Pediatrics 2003 Apr;111(4 Pt 1):790-4), lead investigator H. Peter Chase, MD of the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes in Denver, Colorado reported that the effectiveness of the GlucoWatch Biographer "significantly improved glucose control compared with standard therapy" and that "use of the biographer with an alarm to detect nocturnal hypoglycemia has the potential to increase the safety of diabetes management in children."
Key among the findings in the study was that more instances of hypoglycemia were detected when participants were wearing the GlucoWatch, especially at night. Since nighttime hypoglycemia remains one of the greatest sources of parental anxiety, the GlucoWatch -- at least as shown in this study -- has the potential to help reduce the likelihood of undetected hypoglycemia.
This study was funded partially by the Children with Diabetes Foundation.
