The OneTouch® Ultra is a small, easy to use and very fast meter, producing results in five seconds. The OneTouch Ultra uses FastDraw™ Design test strips, a new capillary action, end-fill test strip that takes only 1 microliter of blood, is touchable, and is approved for alternative sites (e.g., the arm instead of the finger tip). Combining small blood volume, small size (3.12" x 2.25" x .85", 1.5 ounces with battery) and the short, 5-second test time, the OneTouch Ultra is recommended, though the newer OneTouch Ultra2 and UltraMini are better choices (especially the new UltraMini, now that it has a data port).

Testing with the OneTouch Ultra is easy. You must first be sure the meter is calibrated to the vial of test strips. With that out of the way, you simply insert the test strip (the meter turns on automatically) and touch the blood sample to the strip. You can touch the strips while inserting them into the meter. Your test result will be displayed in 5 seconds. The OneTouch Ultra is easy enough to use that even young kids will be able to use it by themselves. The FastDraw™ Design test strips are very thin and flexible, however, and thus require a little more attention when inserting into the meter than test strips for some other meters.

Personal computer users can use OneTouch Diabetes Management Software, LifeScan's diabetes management software, to produce an array of detailed analysis of blood sugar data downloaded from the OneTouch Ultra. A special data interface cable is required which can be purchased, along with the software, for $29.99 plus shipping. See the OneTouch Diabetes Software page for details.

Key features of the OneTouch Ultra include:

  • Fast test results -- 5 seconds
  • Small blood volume (1 microliter)
  • Alternative site testing
  • Small size and weight (easily fits in a kid's T-shirt pocket)
  • End-fill test strips that can be touched
  • Widest temperature range of any strip
  • A 150-test memory for storing blood sugar readings
  • 14- and 30-day averaging
  • Large, easy-to-read display
  • Data interface port
  • Uses one lithium watch battery (rated for approximately 1,000 tests)
  • Displays blood sugar readings in mg/dL or mmol/L (country specific)
  • Three year warranty

Once you've used the OneTouch Ultra, it's hard to imagine waiting longer than 5 seconds for a blood glucose reading. It's also hard to imagine going back to meters that require more than 1 microliter of blood. In short, the OneTouch Ultra is Highly Recommended.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
