  Back to Meters FreeStyle Flash

Overview

The FreeStyle Flash is one of the smallest blood glucose meter available. It uses the same technology as the FreeStyle, with several very important additional features: reduced test time, a display back light, and a light that illuminates the test strip, making testing in the dark possible for the first time. The test strip light might seem simple, but this innovation will help anyone who tests in low-light conditions, such as at at night or in a movie. Using FreeStyle strips that require only 0.3 microliters of blood, Flash also has an updated analysis algorithm that reduces testing time to an average of 7 seconds. The innovative FreeStyle Flash is Highly Recommended.

Features

Key features of the FreeStyle Flash include:

  • Smallest blood volume required for testing (0.3 microliters)
  • Alternative site testing
  • Test results in an average of 7 seconds
  • Test strip light and display back light allowing testing in the dark
  • A 250-test memory for storing blood sugar readings
  • 14-day averaging
  • Four alarms (time alarms for testing reminders)
  • Data interface port (cable is $4.99 via mail-in form included with meter)
  • Displays blood sugar readings in mg/dL or mmol/L
  • Manuals in English and Spanish
  • Five year warranty

Evaluation

Since Flash uses the same test strip technology as the FreeStyle, it ranks just as highly in ease of use, suitability for alternate site testing, and small blood volume. But the real test of Flash is testing in very low light conditions. We were able to check blood sugars at night, in near darkness, with ease, due to the strip light and display back light. (You'll still need a light if you write down blood sugar values in a paper log.) Checking blood sugar in near darkness is now possible with Flash.

Flash's four alarms can be set to alert when a blood check is needed, such as at school for kids or in the middle of the night for older kids and adults. Programming the alarms requires careful reading of the well-written user's manual, but is easy if you follow the directions.

Summary

The FreeStyle Flash, with its test strip light, brings day time convenience to nighttime testing -- or anytime you need to check your blood sugar in low light. Its small blood volume makes alternate site testing very easy and is therefore an excellent choice for anyone who dislikes or is tired of finger sticks. The small size of Flash also makes it very easy to carry too -- it fits easily in pockets or purses. Building on the already highly rated FreeStyle, Flash sets a new standard for testing convenience with its strip light. Highly Recommended.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
