The Ascensia Contour meter from Bayer Diagnostics uses a new test strip that maintains the exceptional capillary action of the Ascensia Elite but requires only 0.6 microliters of blood and yields tests results in 5 seconds. The reduced blood volume and test time are a significant improvement over other Ascensia meters, making the Contour the top rated Ascensia meter and providing Bayer Diagnostics with a meter that is again competitive for kids with diabetes. The Ascensia Contour is Highly Recommended.

The Ascensia Elite has always been known as having a test strip with amazing capillary action. For years, the Elite was often considered the standard against which other end-fill electronic test strips were compared. Well, the Ascensia Contour's test strip is as good if not better than the Elite's test strip. Our testers were amazed at the ability of the Contour's test strip to suck in blood. For kids and teens, this ability is a nice feature but isn't critical. For parents of infants or toddlers with diabetes, however, the incredible capillary action of the Contour's test strip makes it an excellent choice, since even a glancing touch of the strip to the blood is enough to suck in the required 0.6 microliters. Anyone who has tried to check a glucose level while holding an uncooperative, squirming toddler will be amazed at this test strip.

Key features of the Ascensia Contour include:

  • Automatic calibration for each test strip cartridge
  • Capillary action test strip that sucks the blood into the strip automatically
  • Blood volume of 0.6 microliters
  • Alternate site approved
  • Test results in 5 seconds
  • 480 memories for storing blood sugar readings
  • 14-day blood glucose average
  • Computer interface port
  • Large, easy-to-read display
  • Uses two common watch batteries (rated for approximately 1,000 tests)
  • Displays blood sugar readings in mg/dL or mmol/L (country specific)
  • Exceptionally good user's manual in English and Spanish
  • Five year warranty

Win Glucofacts is software made by Bayer specifically to work with all Ascensia meters that have a data port, which includes the Contour. The software is excellent and very easy to use.

If you are the parent of an infant or a toddler with diabetes, the Ascensia Contour should be on the top of your list of meters to try due to the incredible wicking action of the test strip. While the 0.6 microliter blood volume isn't the best in the industry (0.3 microliters is), it is among the smallest. One of our testers had no problem getting enough blood from an alternate site, and our other tester had no problem with a tiny fingerstick drop. In short, the Ascensia Contour is an excellent blood glucose meter for children with diabetes.

Another great feature of the Contour is that the strips require no calibration, so you can open any strip vial, insert the strip, and check your blood sugar. If you use more than one meter (perhaps at home and school), this is a great feature.

Finally, the user's manual for the Contour is exceptionally good, as are all Ascensia manuals. It contains clear photographs of the meter that illustrate every operation. People new to blood glucose monitoring can easily learn how to use the meter from the manual alone.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
