The Ascensia Breeze2 meter from Bayer Diagnostics uses a 10-strip disc, similar to the Ascensia DEX2, but has a different mechanical action to eject the test strips for checking your blood glucose. While the DEX2 can be operated one handed, using your thumb to slide the strip out, the Breeze2 is definitely a two-handed operation. The blue handle at the bottom (see photograph on right) slides down and then pushes back up to eject the test strip at the top. This process cannot be done one handed. Adults and children who have limited dexterity or vision and who want the convenience of the 10-strip disc will find the Breeze2 easier to operate than the DEX2.
Using the latest Breeze2 disks, the sample size has been reduced to 1.0 microliters and the testing time is 5 seconds. This makes the Breeze2 the equal of many other leading meters.
The Breeze2 uses a disk-shaped cartridge about 2.5 inches across that holds ten test strips. With each test strip held safely inside the meter, there's less to carry and less chance of losing or dropping the test strip. Inserting the disk into the Breeze2 is easy, and in fact it's easier than inserting the same disk into the DEX2. In the DEX2, you must align a yellow arrow to a specific position and clip it under two small plastic holders. If you have limited dexterity, that can be a challenge. In the Breeze2, you just drop in the disk and close the meter. It couldn't be easier.
The Ascensia Breeze2 uses similar technology to the Ascensia Elite and, like the Ascensia Elite, the Ascensia Breeze2 test strip sucks the drop of blood (now just 1.0 microliter) up into the test strip, but without the difficulties of opening and inserting a test strip into the meter. This means that there is no aiming of the drop--just touch the end of the test strip to the finger and the test strip does the rest. Tests results are displayed in about 5 seconds.
Key features of the Ascensia Breeze2 include:
- 10-strip cartridge that is held within the meter
- Automatic calibration for each test strip cartridge
- Capillary action test strip that sucks the blood into the strip automatically
- Blood volume 1 microliter with latest strips (Breeze2)
- Test results in 5 seconds with latest strips (Breeze2)
- 420 test memory
- 1-, 7-, 14-, and 30-day blood glucose averages
- Computer interface port
- Large, easy-to-read display
- Single purpose buttons (makes it easier to use than the DEX2)
- Uses one standard battery (rated for approximately 1,000 tests)
- Displays blood sugar readings in mg/dL or mmol/L (country specific)
- Exceptionally good user's manual
- Five year warranty
Win Glucofacts is software made by Bayer specifically to work with all Ascensia meters that have a data port, which includes the Breeze2. The software is excellent and very easy to use.
If you value the convenience of storing the test strips inside the meter, and you have limited dexterity and therefore would have difficulty using the DEX2, then the Ascensia Breeze2 is a good choice.
While the Breeze2 can be used by young children by themselves, unless your child has dexterity or vision issues, the DEX2 would be a better choice if you want to use the Ascensia disc system. Note also that the Breeze2 is larger than the DEX2, so it will fit better in the hands of older kids and adults.
Two final points. First, the user's manual for the Breeze2 is exceptionally good. It contains clear photographs of the meter that illustrate every operation. People new to blood glucose monitoring can easily learn how to use the meter from the manual alone. Second, while the Breeze2 may not be the best choice for kids who test a lot, it is a fine choice for older adults with type 2 diabetes who test infrequently or for anyone with limited dexterity.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
