Are you looking for a fun and interesting way to help your child learn how to make good food choices, or to learn about the nutritional content of hundreds of foods? Look no further than Diabetes Food Pyramid Bingo, a new game by Smart Picks, Inc that is fun for the entire family.
The game comes with 30 two-sided game cards, 95 two-sided food picture squares, a two-sided checking chart to record squares that have been called, and 600 markers. Game cards and picture squares are two-sided because there are two versions of the game: carbohydrates, and protein and fat.
In the carbohydrate version of the game, players will learn about carbohydrate counting as well as exchange lists and the food guide pyramid. Food categories include grains, beans and starchy vegetables; vegetables; milk; fruit; and other carbohydrates. Example squares include fat-free milk (1 cup), and brownie, unfrosted (2 inch square).
In the protein and fat version of the game, players will learn about protein and fat sources, including how protein sources fall into high-fat, medium-fat, and low-fat categories. You'll be able to compare foods such as cheese (high-fat protein) with turkey white meat (very low-fat protein), which an help you make better food choices.
The various food squares contain realistic food choices -- things that kids actually eat -- which helps make the game both fun to play and relevant for kids. (Okay, not everything will be on your kid's food list, but a lot will be.) Kids and adults will learn about different food choices within a category (exchanges), as well as potentially better food choices based on carbohydrate values.
Diabetes Food Pyramid Bingo is priced at $35.00. The publisher even has lesson plans available to help you make best use of the game.
