The Personal LasetteTM laser lancing device uses a laser beam to obtain a capillary blood sample, rather than a steel lancet. Water in the skin absorbs the energy from the laser beam, instantly vaporizing tissue. Two models are available: the Personal Lasette designed for individual home use, and the Professional Lasette, designed for multiple person use in a clinical or professional setting.

The Professional Lasette uses disposable lens covers to protect the laser source from contamination. The Personal Lasette uses a clear film cartridge to protect the laser source. The film cartridge is good for 120 tests and retails for $15.

The Lasette has 16 power settings to help adapt the unit to each patient and minimize pain. Power comes from rechargeable batteries. The Lasette is manufactured by and distributed by Cell Robotics.

Testing of the Professional Lasette
During our week of testing, three volunteers tested the Professional Lasette. All agreed that the Professional Lasette is very easy to use. After inserting a special "power key" in the bottom and turning it on, you attach a disposable lense cover, press the "1" button to set the power, the "2-3" button to charge it, and the "2-3" button again to discharge it. The discharge is instantaneous.

Our 11-year-old tester said that the Professional Lasette felt the same as her regular lancets, but she rarely feels blood tests. Our adult with diabetes said it was painless, and our adult without diabetes said it felt the same as regular lancets. Each tester had to adjust the power a few times to get a depth that provided enough blood.

Since the Professional Lasette burns away tissue, rather than cutting it like a traditional lancet, there is a noticeable odor of burning flesh with each test. The odor proved to be too unpleasant for our 11-year-old tester. Keeping your finger tight against the Professional Lasette for a few seconds reduces the odor, but doesn't eliminate it. Our adult tester did not find it to be a problem.

The Professional Lasette weighs 1 lb., 13.5 oz. (834g). Pricing of the Professional Lasette, which we tested, is approximately US$2,000. Pricing for the Personal Lasette is US$495 as of July 2004.

For medical professionals who perform many blood tests, the Professional Lasette eliminates the risk of contamination from used lancets. For people who find traditional steel lancets to be painful, the Personal Lasette offers an alternative.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
