Saylor Abel
Diagnosed December 10, 2001

Saylor was diagnosed two months before her third birthday. Since then she has adapted (better than the rest of us!) to the significant changes in her life. She is a healthy, active 3-year-old who loves to play with her dolls and read her books. When she plays house she "tests" her babies before they can eat. For her it's just a normal part of life!

Saylor is also an actress who has already done one movie and loves to go on auditions in hopes of more. People often ask if having diabetes has affected her acting but it really hasn't. Her mother tries to schedule auditions so that they don't conflict with her meals, but other than that, she's treated just like any other budding actress. She loves to audition - she walks into a room full of adults whose only reason for being there is to listen to her talk. For her, it just doesn't get any better than that! Booking the job is just icing on the cake.

The concept for Saylor's quilt square came from Saylor's mother, who refuses to allow this disease define who her daughter is. When Saylor overheard some relatives talking about her she immediately corrected them - "I'm not a Diabetic, I'm a little girl!"

Quilt made Anita De Hart, Saylor's grandmother
