A Word About The Program

The program is designed to run 4-7 sessions simultaneously during most of the conference. There will be full two-day educational tracks for parents of children with diabetes, school-age children (ages 8 and up), teens, and adults with diabetes. There will be many sessions appropriate for health care professionals. These will include break-out presentations as well as large and small facilitated discussion groups. Some sessions will be offered in Spanish. Several educational sessions will be repeated this year for ease of scheduling. For details of the conference program, continue to the Preliminary Program.

The Conference Hotels

All conference sessions will be held at the beautiful Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California. This is located 9 miles from downtown Los Angeles and is serviced by the LAX and Burbank Airports.

Three hotels, all located within very easy walking distance of the Pasadena Convention Center will provide room blocks for conference participants.

The Sheraton Pasadena, located adjacent to the Pasadena Convention Center, will serve as conference headquarters as well as childcare headquarters. It will also be the site of Friday afternoon's Meet the Experts Reception. Hotel rooms include 2 double beds or a king bed, hairdryers, irons/ironing boards, make-up/shaving mirrors; coffee makers with Starbucks Coffee, and two telephones with modem hook-up. Each room has on command movie systems and complimentary morning newspaper.There is a heated outdoor swimming pool, lighted tennis courts, and exercise facilities. Room rates are $125 per night with extra charge for rollaway beds and more than two adults per room. Club level accommodations may be reserved for $155 per night, and "Smart Rooms" (with fax/copier/printer; CD player, desk with ergonomic chair) are available for $170 per night. The Sheraton runs a complimentary shuttle service 7 days a week within a 5 mile radius.

The Hilton Pasadena is located approximately one block from the Convention Center. Guest rooms include 2 double beds or a king bed, mini bar, coffee maker, on-demand movies, complimentary HBO, web tv, and Nintendo. Rooms also include a "Smart Desk" including 2-line telephone with voice mail, data port, high-speed Internet access, desk-level outlets, laptop tray as well as an ergonomically correct chair. A pool and jacuzzi are also on site, as is a fitness center with cardiovascular equipment and free weights. Rooms are $134 per night for singles and doubles, with each additional adult $25. Suites are available for $345 and up. The Hilton will be the site of the Friday evening Teen Dinner Dance.

photo The DoubleTree Hotel Pasadena is located approximately two blocks from the Convention Center, and is adjacent to the scenic "Plaza of the Fountains" and across the street from the newly-completed Paseo Colorado (chic multi-block shopping area with boutique stores and small restaurants). Each room features 2 double or a king bed, coffee maker, fax machine, 2-line speaker phone with data port, voice mail messaging, iron and ironing board, and hairdryer. The DoubleTree has a state-of-the-art health facility with a fully equipped exercise room, saunas, and steam rooms. An outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi are also on site. The DoubleTree will be the site of Friday evening's Dining with the Experts event, sponsored by Medtronic MiniMed. Rooms are $136 per night; suites are available at higher charges.

All conference room reservations must be made through the Pasadena Convention & Visitors Bureau Housing Department. Reservation forms will be sent to registered conference participants and will also be available online. Housing reservation forms must be submitted via fax or mail, and reservations will be on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning January 15, 2002. Phone reservations will not be accepted. Try an Insulin Pump!

Come to the conference and try a pump! All four pump companies -- Animas, Disetronic, Medtronic MiniMed, and SOOIL (Dana Diabecare) -- will be offering this great opportunity for potential would-be pumpers to try a pump using saline. Anyone interested in wearing a pump (with saline) may do so Thursday and Friday at the conference. A prescription from your physician is required and must include the wording "insulin pump trial with saline."

Conference Facilities

The Pasadena Convention Center offers 65,000 square feet of exhibit space, 22 meeting rooms, and a 3,000 seat auditorium. The Exhibition Building in the Convention Center will house the Exhibit Hall, as well as Thursday and Friday breakfast buffets and snack breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. The Exhibit Hall will have the Grand Opening Wednesday evening at the Exhibitor's Reception. Hours on Thursday will be 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Friday, the Exhibit Hall will be open in the morning only, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The Friends and Family Banquet on Thursday evening, sponsored by Novo Nordisk and LifeScan, will also be held in the Exhibition Building.

The CWD Quilt for Life

Children with Diabetes families now have a new way to let their voices be heard and their families be counted--through the CWD Quilt for Life. With each 3' x 3' quilt square representing a child with diabetes, this will be a powerful message to the public that our children are real people with real hopes and dreams -- and they want a cure now! The quilt will be displayed to the public for the first time during the Friends for Life conference and will be shown on Sunday morning, July 21. More details to come.


Childcare will be available to children 8 and under, including infants and toddlers, thanks to the support of Animas Corporation. Childcare will be located in the Sheraton Ballroom adjacent to the conference center. Kids Klub of Pasadena will be providing the caregivers and, again this year, Animas will be offering the support of certified diabetes educators to assist with diabetes management and concerns. Please note that Pre-Registration for childcare is necessary and must be received by July 8. Childcare will not be available on a drop-in basis. Additionally, childcare will only be available for full days. This is necessary for appropriate staffing ratios, particularly for the younger children. For school-aged children and teens, age-appropriate sessions will run on exactly the same schedule as sessions for parents. The school-age track and the teen track will stay in the same rooms throughout the two days of sessions. This will allow parents to drop off children at their sessions and return at the end of the session to grab a snack and bathroom break (all breaks are 30 minutes with the exception of lunch which is 90 minutes). Please note that children and teen sessions are appropriate for all children, not just those with type 1 diabetes.

The Family Activity Village

The Family Activity Village (FAV), sponsored by Cygnus, Inc., is a Friday afternoon treat for children of all ages. Carnival attractions and games will be featured in the central plaza area between the Pasadena Convention Center and the Sheraton. There are designated supervised FAV times for teens and school-aged children that fit in the overall program for these age groups. Please check the conference program for specifics. Children in childcare will also have an opportunity to play in the FAV while the older children are in sessions. The FAV will be open on Friday only from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Lots of Goodies!

Make sure to plan for plenty of time in the conference Exhibit Hall. As always, the exhibitors will have lots of goodies for all conference participants! In addition, at the registration area, each family will receive a styrofoam cooler stuffed with goodies, courtesy of ReliOn. This cooler can be used for snacks and drinks in your room, or as a handy carry-on to take all the goodies back home on the plane! Also, each family attending the conference will receive a copy of My Own Type 1 Diabetes Book donated by author Sandra J. Hollenberg. These books will be available at Registration. Sandra will be at the conference with her grandson, Malcolm, and will be a participant on the parent's panel.

Information on Car Rentals

Children with Diabetes has negotiated special car rental rates with Hertz for conference participants. For rates and reservations, call Hertz at 800-654-2240 in the U.S. In Canada, call 1-800-263-0600. You may also reserve a vehicle through your nearest Hertz reservation center or through your travel agent. Refer to the Hertz CV#022J0581 to get the special conference rates. Meeting rates are guaranteed from one week prior through one week after the meeting dates and are subject to car availability. Advance reservations are recommended.

Information on Airport Shuttles

Conference participants requiring transportation between any of the Los Angeles area airports and the conference hotels may choose to ride the shuttle. Shuttle services are being provided by Xpress Shuttle. Reservations are required. To obtain a shuttle voucher, contact Laura Billetdeaux at 734-428-8265. One voucher is required per family.
