Saturday was a very fun day at the Marriott World Center, and included a delicious buffet lunch sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company. Having a nutritious meal mid-day was especially important as there was a lot going on right in the Cypress corridor - the exhibit hall was open all day, Sports Central continued to feature the CWDecathlon, and the Quilt for Life Scavenger Hunt was underway!
The Quilt for Life Scavenger Hunt kept everyone's attention on the beautiful 735+ quilt squares crafted in honor of children and families with type 1 diabetes. Lauren Lanning and her team once again created the questions about the quilt squares and watched over the Scavenger Hunt all morning. Lots of family teams participated – and the winners received Disney Dollars!
The CWDecathlon awards were presented on Saturday afternoon, with Tom Karlya presiding over the presentation. Proud athletes in each division and for each event were awarded first, second, and third place medals. Congratulations to all who participated, and many thanks to all of the volunteers who made the first CWDecathlon such a fabulous addition to Sports Central!
At 4:00 on the dot, the exhibit hall and Sports Central closed, and the CWD 'tear-down teams' went to work. Under the watchful eyes of Ash Head and Peter Megaw, the Quilt for Life was taken down, and packed back into crates with the utmost care. Next door in Sports Central, the games and equipment were dismantled. By 5:00, the CWD moving crew was back in gear, loading everything back into the UHaul for transport to the CWD storage units in Orlando. It was hot work – and a lot of fun – and by 7:30, the crew was back on site.
Saturday evening was very relaxed, and many CWD families took the opportunity to enjoy dinner at one of the Marriott World Center restaurants, prior to the Howl at the Moon event held by the Diabetes Scholars Foundation.
