CWD is pleased to announce a day of Focus Groups at the Friends for Life Conference. The focus groups will be held on Wednesday, July 9, and will be located in the Coronado Springs Resort Convention Center (right where the rest of the conference will be) in Fiesta 1, 2, and 3.

What is a Focus Group?
A focus group is a small gathering of people with the purpose of discussing one particular topic or "focus." In our case, the focus groups will be about 25 people each, and may discuss a new product in development, a product already on the market (and the company wants feedback), a particular method of diabetes managementů or it may focus on a specific age group (i.e., how do teens feel about pumping or blood glucose testing?).

What is the Schedule?
Focus groups will be held at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. They will last 90 minutes each. Refreshments will be provided (snacks and beverages) during each meeting.

The current schedule is:

Starting Time Vendor, Topic, Ages
9:00 am TheraSense
(children and adult discussion regarding a new blood glucose meter under development; more info to follow)

9:00 am Medtronic MiniMed
Insulin pump therapy will be discussed as the main topic, with your input sought on a number of related issues. This session is for parents of pumpers or adult pumpers.

11:00 am Animas Corporation
The topic of discussion, led by a certified athletic trainer/pumper/Animas trainer, is exercise and pumping. Bring your questions about how to exercise safely, keep in shape, and wear an insulin pump! This focus group is appropriate for any age group.

11:00 am TheraSense
This session will focus on a continuous blood glucose sensing device currently under development. The session is for adults.

1:00 pm LifeScan
Discover LifeScan's new OneTouch UltraSmart, the Meter and Electronic Logbook in One!

1:00 pm Medtronic MiniMed
Pump and Meter Integration. This session, targeting parents of pumpers as well as teen and adult pumpers themselves, will focus on a meter with the ability to "talk" to a pump to drive a bolus calculator.

1:00 pm Maersk Medical
Join CWD teen facilitators and representatives from Maersk Medical in Denmark to discuss pumping and infusion sets. What do you enjoy about pumping? What is challenging? If you could change one thing about your infusion set, what would it be? This session is for teens (12-18 please).

3:00 pm Deltec
Join Deltec representatives and give them feedback on new insulin pump features, infusion set ideas and other topics as they strive to deliver products that meet your needs.

3:00 pm Kivalo, Inc.
KIVALO, Inc. has developed a technology that allows families of children with diabetes to monitor their child's blood glucose in real time from remote locations. The system has alarms and alerts that identify threatening situations, facilitating early intervention. The obvious advantage of such a system is that parents/caregivers are able to monitor the child, and manage the disease when the child, is out of their presence. This system will be discussed. This session is for parents.

How do I sign up?
You must currently be registered for the conference to sign up for a focus group. Any member of your family may participate. Children under 12 should not participate unless it is a focus group specifically for children, or for adults and children. You may participate in more than one focus group. To sign up, please send an email to and indicate:

If multiple members of your family would like to participate in focus groups, please indicate the above for each person. Otherwise, we don't know who wants to go to which session.

Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a group is full, we will so indicate on this webpage.

For more information, call Laura Billetdeaux at 734-428-8265 (eastern time).
