This year's Friends For Life conference will feature digital retinal photography that provides immediate, extremely high quality photographs of the eye's retina, including the optic nerve and blood vessels that are most likely to be affected by diabetes. Printed photos will be available for you to bring to your own eye doctor and for comparison with future photos and eye examinations. Although not a substitute for detailed, stereoscopic (three-dimensional) evaluation of the retina by an experienced eye care professional, this technology provides a wonderful new tool for assessing and monitoring your eye health over time.
Participants will be asked to look through a special lens at a blinking green light. A bright but very tolerable flash of light allows a precision Charged Couple Display (CCD) sensor to capture the details of the retina in less than 1/4 of a second (the same kind of sensor is used by NASA's Space Telescope). Expert photographic readers (including eye doctors specializing in diabetes) will be available to explain individual results. All instrumentation is being made available through the generosity of Kowa-Optimed, Inc., makers of high quality ophthalmic instruments.
Thanks to Kowa-Optimed for providing the digital retinal imaging equipment
and Dr. Paul Chous for overseeing the imaging.
