Feedback from FFL UK 2011

Just to say thanks so much for such an amazing weekend. As first timers we weren't too sure exactly what to expect - but we were inspired, educated, moved, encouraged, welcomed and truly overwhelmed by how good the whole weekend for all of us. My parents in law attended with us and not only have we left with a whole load of information and inspiration, but they now have a much greater understanding of Daisy's diabetes, how they can help and support and I know they found Joe's grandparents session emotional but incredibly supportive - so I am very grateful for that being in the schedule - I know feel we will get far more understanding and support from within our family now which was exactly what we needed - so thank you for that amongst everything else! I hope you have a well earned break scheduled now!

It's so difficult to put into words how much it meant to us all as a family. We were a mess when leaving. I made what can only be described as a pitiful attempt of fighting back the tears at the end of the keynote. Danny was teetering on the brink too. Abi cried in the car on the way home. And Jess summed it up in saying, 'I don't want to leave. This is where my friends are.' As ever we learned new things and refreshed on stuff we'd learned before. I came back feeling energised about diabetes, but in the most exhausted way imaginable ;o) And for those who saw me towards the end of Sunday, it doesn't take much imagining! Even with all the exhaustion though, I wouldn't change being there for the world.

It was heart warming to see Beth so happy with all of the friends that she has made over the last few years, definitely Friends For Life. I almost cried when I saw them together in the dining room, all checking their blood sugars together, all feeling the same, like they hadn't a care in the world with big smiles on their faces - that's what it's all about for me.

Absolutely blooming brilliant, awesome, inspiring, wicked, tremendous, thought provoking, sociable event of the year ! Thank you Laura, Jeff and Co and to all the CWD families I love so much.

Conference Information

Children with Diabetes, Inc. (CWD) presents our 4th annual family conference in the UK! Join our international group of world-renowned clinicians, researchers, physicians, adults, children, and families with diabetes to learn the most current information in diabetes care. Attend educational sessions and get cutting-edge ideas for your family's diabetes management. Participate in parent discussion groups and find new, creative ways to help and motivate your children. Watch toddlers and teens, young parents and grandparents, new diabetes professionals and practiced clinicians make new and lifelong friendships. This is a conference you won't ever forget! All presentations, activities and additional information will be provided in English only.

The Conference Schedule in a Nutshell

  • Friday, 2 November 2012: Registration opens in the afternoon; Grand Opening of the Exhibit Area, including evening refreshments; Welcome Keynote
  • Saturday, 3 November 2012: Sessions for adults and children all day (including grandparents); dinner and disco-themed party for adults and children; teen social function for ages 13-17
  • Sunday, 4 November 2012: Sessions for adults and children all day (including grandparents); Teens will be together offsite for an all-day field trip, with teen faculty and staff

Beaumont offers many sport and leisure facilities including outdoor tennis courts, football pitch, indoor swimming pool, outdoor giant chess and lots of open green lawn to play on. During the Children's sessions, weather permitting, all age groups will enjoy outside fun time as part of their daily programme; this is built right into the schedule. Programme details for each age group will be available on the CWD website beginning May 1, 2012.

For the structured programme, children are divided into the following groups: Elementary (Primary) (ages 6-9), Tween (ages 10-12), Teen (ages 13-17), and childcare (ages 5 and under).

The Conference Venue and Reservations

Located a short distance from Windsor Great Park, Beaumont House, Old Windsor is the largest of the Principal Hayley conference venues set in 40 acres of landscaped grounds, dating back to the 14th century. With a hugely impressive colonnaded portico, the building has been beautifully refurbished throughout and offers exceptional service in keeping with the tradition and majesty of the exclusive royal borough.

Although offering a secluded environment, Beaumont House is only 5 minutes from the M25 and M4 motorways.

Following extensive investment over recent years, all of the 414 bedrooms offer the utmost in comfort and contemporary design. Clean lines combine with the highest quality fabrics to create a fresh and profoundly relaxing environment. In the newly designed rooms, soft, brown-suede headboards sit atop luxurious beds scattered with both decorative and supportive cushions. All of the rooms have thick, soft mattress toppers and luxurious pillows, to ensure a restful night's sleep. And each room comes complete with its own en-suite facilities, including bath and shower.

  • Safe that will fit laptop computers (Superior and Executive Rooms Only)

  • Trouser press and Iron

All meeting and function spaces at the Beaumont House are non-smoking. Parking is complimentary.

There are several types of rooms to accommodate different size and make-up of families. They include:

  • Twin rooms (2 twin beds)
  • Double bed rooms with sofa bed (can sleep 2 adults and 2 children)
  • Double bed rooms with rollaway (can sleep 2 adults and 1 child)
  • Double bed rooms (can sleep 2 adults)

Room rates include bed and breakfast. Rates per night are as follows (note these rates do not include VAT):

  • 2 adults with 1 child = 120.00
  • 2 adults with 2 children = 125.00
  • 2 adults = 110.00
  • 2 children = 80.00
  • 1 adult with 1 child = 95.00
  • 1 adult with 2 children = 115.00
  • You may supplement for Old School Deluxe rooms at additional cost (these rooms are for adults only)

Please phone the hotel if you have questions about which type of room best suits your family. Note that it may be preferable for larger families to reserve two rooms (the largest rooms accommodate 2 adults and 2 children). The Beaumont House is now accepting reservations for this conference. When making a reservation, you must indicate that you are attending the Children with Diabetes, Friends for Life conference in order to get the preferred rate. Reservations are first-come, first-served. It is anticipated that this event will sell out, so please make your reservations early. For those who wish to stay at the Beaumont House and holiday in the area, the preferential bed and breakfast rate may be extended three days prior to, and three days after the conference. Do not email credit card information as email is not secure.

Sir Michael Hirst

Photo Sir Michael Hirst from the United Kingdom is currently the President-Elect of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). He will take the office of President of the Federation in 2012. Sir Michael will join FFL UK as an honored guest.

Special Guest
Stephen Dixon

Photo Stephen Dixon is one of the main presenters on Sky News, currently anchoring Sky News Sunrise. Stephen, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 17, will attend Friends for Life UK as a special guest. His appearance is sponsored by ACCU-CHEK.

Alex Silverstein

Photo Alex Silverstein was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at only 18 months old, however it was not until he was 18 years, after attending DAFNE, a structured educational course for Type 1 diabetes, that he felt empowered to help others with diabetes. Alex is Diabetes UKs Young Adult Project Manager.
