In early March 2007, Jeff Hitchcock, Dr. Bruce Buckingham, Natalie Bellini, and Paul Madden, all members of the Children with Diabetes conference faculty, traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to participate in the 2007 Arab Children Health Congress. The Congress, under the patronage of HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, Wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister UAE, Ruler of Dubai, drew health care professionals and families from around the Middle East for three days of educational sessions and social activities focused on diabetes in children. The UAE, like much of the world, is experiencing a growing incidence of type 1 diabetes and a growing problem of young people being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

On the evening of Monday, March 5, the Opening Ceremony included a welcoming address by His Excellency Qhadi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General, Department of Health and Medical Services. Rashid Saeed Khalid, chosen as the Ambassador to the Arab Children Health Congress 2006, then spoke about how important the Congress has been to helping children with special needs in the UAE and the gulf region in general. Following a brief play put on by young people from the UAE, HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein graciously joined the players on stage for photographs.

The Congress sessions lasted three days and featured distinguished speakers from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates; Egypt; Jordan; the United States; Kuwait; Oman; Bahrain; Saudi Arabia; and Qatar (in order of appearance). Topics ranged from strategies to deal with the growing incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes to practical guidance on dealing with diabetes day-to-day. Young people living with diabetes spoke about their personal experiences, helping to remind everyone of the real meaning of living with diabetes.

Twelve pages of photos from the Congress follow, helping to offer a sense of what it was like. Our many thanks to everyone who helped to make the 2007 Arab Children Health Congress a success.
